The coffee cup trembled in Eleanor's hands, the warm liquid sloshing dangerously close to the rim. She hadn't slept well. The novel, tucked away in the bedside drawer, had haunted her dreams. Every single scene, every description, was a violation. A violation of her trust.

She kept checking the clock. The seconds crawled by, each one a tiny pinprick against her sanity. Outside, the city roared, but inside, she was trapped in a suffocating silence. She felt a burning sensation in her chest and swallowed hard.

When David finally arrived, the sound of his key in the door sent a jolt of pure dread through her. The smile she forced felt unnatural, plastered onto her face.
